How a Yoto Player Changed Our Family for the Better

Last year, I was looking for a way to bring more stories into our home without adding more screen time. I wanted my children to have easy access to rich language, great literature, and calming bedtime stories while also giving them independence. Enter the Yoto player. It has truly been a game changer for our family.

I will admit that I initially put off buying one because I did not realise I could swap the content on the make your own cards at any point. Once I understood that, everything changed. This has been amazing for our eldest who will listen to an entire novel and then immediately want the next book in the series. Meanwhile her younger sister loves having the same familiar stories stay on her cards. Being able to easily change content for one child while keeping consistency for the other has been such a gift.

Our girls quickly learned how to use the Yoto on their own. They can choose what they want to listen to, pop in a card, adjust the volume, and settle in with a story without needing help. That small piece of autonomy has been so valuable. They feel confident and in control of their listening and I love watching them explore stories independently.

What has amazed me most is just how much listening happens in our home now. Our eldest has listened to multiple novels in a single day. The language exposure, vocabulary growth, and immersion in storytelling has been incredible. It has sparked deeper conversations about characters and plots and has nurtured a genuine love for literature.

One of our favourite features is that we can make our own content. Our eldest has a Yoto card with her figure skating solo music on it and uses it to practice at home independently. It has been such a simple way to support her interests and give her ownership over her practice.

Bedtime has also become calmer and more enjoyable. Instead of online audio or negotiating just one more story, the Yoto provides safe high quality stories that they can fall asleep to. I know exactly what they are listening to and never have to worry about ads or inappropriate content. It feels like a modern version of the classic bedtime read aloud.

Beyond entertainment, our children have learned so much through audio. Stories from different cultures, classic literature, educational content, and music have all become part of our daily rhythm. Whether we are resting, playing, travelling, or winding down for the day, the Yoto has a place in our home.

It is a simple tool but it has made a meaningful difference for our family. More stories, more learning, more independence, and more peaceful moments. And for that I am very grateful.
